Native American tribes have opened a plethora of casinos across the state where gamblers are free to partake in slots and card games. This started in 1995 when then-Governor Gary Johnson approved a tribal gaming pact along with a statewide lottery.
New Mexico caused a bit of a surprise when in the fall of 2018 it became the sixth state to take a legal sports bet. The Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel was the venue for this momentous event but one of the stipulations is bettors are not permitted to bet on any of the local teams.
The state is home to several racetracks which all offer parimutuel wagering, and residents can also legally take part in Daily Fantasy Sports leagues
