The Wolverine State is no stranger to gambling, as it is home to over 20 Native American casinos. There are also three casinos based in Detroit, which are all overseen by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
The state is also home to a horse racing track where visitors can place parimutuel wagers, and residents in Michigan also have access to DFS and a state lottery.
It was hoped that when the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court that Michigan would also seek to allow the placing of sports bets at the various licensed venues.
Lawmakers acted in June 2018 and presented House Bill 4926 -- which not only would have allowed for the provision of sports betting at land-based establishments but also it would have legalized online casino games, poker and online sports betting -- to the Michigan House where it won the vote by 68-40. The House Bill was then presented to the Senate, and it was then approved.
However, just as it was about to be made into law, outgoing Governor Rick Snyder vetoed the bill and the process will now have to start again.
