When New Jersey looked to oppose the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the Iowa Racing Gaming Association (IRGC) announced its plans to begin creating sports betting legislation if the federal prohibition of sports betting was repealed. Now that this has happened, it has helped to clear the way for Iowa lawmakers to act.
In May 2019, a law was passed and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds that allowed the IRGC to implement the regulations that would be needed to enable sportsbook betting in the state.
Their quick actions allowed the first retail sportsbooks to begin operation in August 2019 that will allow each casino in the state to open up to two sports betting websites in partnership with third party operators.
The first of these sites went live soon after with William Hill and Elite Sportsbook with more on the horizon. Although these are full mobile sites, registration does initially need to be completed in person at one of the land-based operators, however, the need to do perform this task will expire on January 1st 2021.
Although every care has been taken into providing the information for this map, state law can often change and this map is how we at GamingUSA understand the gambling law in each state to be as of March 27th 2023
