Online Poker in Illinois
Although the World Series of Poker has a presence at one of the brick-and-mortar casinos in Illinois, there are no current legal ways to play real-money poker online. There are options to play on free-play sites that offer prizes instead of money, but the legality of the practice is very much a gray area.
The ability to play online almost became a reality in 2017 when the state attempted to regulate DFS and added online poker onto the bill; operators would have had to pay an application fee of $250,000 coupled with a licensing fee of $10 million, and they would have been able to offset the gigantic licensing fee against future taxes. Although the vote was passed in the state Senate, it came to a standstill in the House.
However, with further changes rumored to be on the horizon for sports betting in the state, it could be that we are about to see poker follow suit.
